This Week's Review and Giveaway: Hatley Kitchen Accessories

If you live in Canada, like I do, you know a Hatley product when you see it. Their tagline, "Get clothes to nature," says it all. You can't travel far in Vancouver without seeing a child wearing a Hatley Raincoat with matching Hatley Rainboots or toting a Hatley Umbrella. My kids and I both own and wear Hatley PJ's and many a BC shopper totes one of Hatley's screen print Tote Bags.

Hatley takes their great fabric designs, which are inspired by nature or wildlife, then add everyday sayings and popular culture to bring out the "pun" in everyone. A beaver on an apron toting that he is a "Dam great cook", a cat on a "Hot Flashes" tea towel, "Farmer Jill" inspired oven mitts and pot holders, bright melamine kids' dish sets, "I need a pug" coffee mugs, and more. And that's just their line of kitchen products. Whatever you need, Hatley has it and their selection is fabulous.

When I received a variety of products to review from Hatley, I knew I would love the designs. What's not to love about cute animals doing or saying funny things? But what I wanted to know was would their products stand up to my kitchen practices? I cook a lot and I wash dishes a lot. Over and over and over again. So, how would the Pot Holder, Oven MittTea Towel, and Pocketed Apron hold up to wash after wash in the old Maytag? And since I drink a substantial amount of coffee everyday, how would the Early Bird Mug stand up against cycle after cycle in the dishwasher?

The first thing you'll notice about the Pocketed Apron is that it is sturdy and a good size. It covers the front of your clothes completely and the abundance of material makes it suitable for the male or female cook. The cotton is thick and the adjustable neck straps feel good on your neck. And it's the same with the material used to make the Tea Towel. This is 100% high quality cotton and it is super absorbent. No having to get a new tea towel halfway through drying the dishes here. I got through many a good sink full of dishes with just the one towel.

When I tried out the Pot Holder and Oven Mitt, the first thing I noticed was how substantial they were in thickness and in size. The comfortable padding was also accentuated by the quilted design. There's nothing worse than feeling the heat come through your oven mitt when you are holding a 15 pound turkey in a scorching hot roasting pan. The mitt is big enough that my husband could fit his hand in to it no problem and the pot holder is also a good size. And as for the Early Bird Mug? Well, what can I say but it held a good amount of coffee in it and I had to smile everytime I took a sip. The mug displays a cute little chick with the words "Early Bird" written on it and if you know me well, you'd be smiling too because let's just say, early mornings are not my thing.

Into the wash they go!
I ran the Tea Towel, Pot HolderOven Mitt and Pocketed Apron through the washing machine according to the detailed directions for each item a few times for testing purposes. All came through fabulously well. The stitching remained tight and secure on all of the above and the absorbancy was still fabulous for the tea towel. I noticed no fading of the color itself and another bonus was how the apron and the tea towel got softer after each wash. And as for my little chick? He's still chirpy, colorful and intact. Way to go little bird.

Another reason to love Hatley...
Not only do I enjoy Hatley products because of their cute animal inspired and well constructed and designed fabrics, I also appreciate the eco-consciousness of Hatley. They use organic cotton whenever possible,  their dyes are eco friendly, non chlorinated bleach is utilized and they use close loop dyers which ensures that waste water from the dyeing process does not contaminate the water table of the communities they work with.

Hatley designs are now sold around the world and the Hatley family continues to ensure that their products stand for the same principles on which it was founded: family, good design, quality and of course, loads of laughs.
