This Week's Review and Giveaway: Kitchen Scraps Cookbook by Pierre Lamielle
"Best Illustrated Cookbook in the World." That's the award Pierre Lamielle won in 2009, beating out 17 other cookbooks from around the world for his witty, creative yet practical play with your food cookbook that is filled with easy to follow, comfort food recipes with a twist. A Pierre Lamielle twist.
From Pierre's Blog:
"I like to draw. So, I went to the Capilano College Graphic Design and Illustration Program to become an illustrator. I like to cook. So I went to the French Culinary Institute in NYC, to learn how to cook. Shelley, the editor at Swerve Magazine liked my drawings and cooking, so a few years ago we came up with this fun idea of doing an illustrated food column with recipes. Then a cookbook publisher called Whitecap liked the idea of making it into a cookbook. So we came up with Kitchen Scraps: a humorous illustrated cookbook."
Born and raised in North Vancouver, BC (yay homeboy!), Pierre is not your traditional chef putting out your traditional cookbook. Quirky drawings accompany each of the recipes provided so you have to use your imagination to "see" what the finished product will look like. But, you won't mind not having photos to gaze upon because you'll be too busy laughing at the whimsical illustrations and Pierre's amusing thoughts as you cook. And you'll be happily munching away with a smile on your face as you eat.
Here at Can I get the Recipe? we featured three easy and delicious recipes from Kitchen Scraps: Half Baked Pot Brownies, Angel Hair Conditioner Pasta, and Madonna "Big Mamma" Ballzinni's Risotto and Meatballs.
First up, the Half Baked Pot Brownies. These brownies are super chocolatey and perfectly gooey and I love how you mix them and bake them in the same pot. Easy cleanup! My kids love them too, but seriously, what kid (or adult?) wouldn't? They are truly delicious! Next time I make them, I think I am just going to set the pot right in the middle of the table, hand out spoons and let everyone just dive in. Maybe we'll throw a scoop of vanilla icecream on top for good measure! What a fun way to eat some fabulously delicious brownies!
And finally, Madonna "Big Mamma" Ballzinni's Risotto and Meatballs. For anyone who loves spaghetti and meatballs but want to try it with a twist, this is the way to go. I honestly though my oldest pickier eater would complain about the risotto as I figured he would prefer spaghetti but I heard nothing as he ate this dish. He and his little brother loved it and so did I. I think one of the reasons the kids enjoyed it so much was that it was easier to eat than trying to pick up/slurp up spaghetti noodles. And I admit it...I loved that there was no splattering of spaghetti sauce all over the table to clean up afterwards. (Well, OK, not as much spaghetti sauce to clean up as usual.) To top it all off, the flavor of this dish was fantastic! As my kids exclaimed, this was a "super yummy" meal. So in my books, it was an all round excellent, everybody's happy dinner!
